Operation:
1.  Sit on the edge of your bed if possible,or sit up as far as you can in bed.

2.  Hold the incentive spirometer in an upright position.

3.  Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips tightly around it.

4.  Breathe in slowly and as deeply as possible.  Allow the first ball in the 600cc chamber to rise to the top;  the other two balls still
at the bottom.

5.  Enhance your breath, allow the second ball in the 900cc chamber torise to the top;  the third ball still at the bottom.

6.  Keep enhancing your breath;  allow all three balls to rise to the top.

7.  Hold your breath as long as possible.  Then take out the mouthpiece and exhale slowly an allow the balls to fall to the bottom of
the column.

8.  Rest for a few seconds and repeat steps one to seven at least 10 times every hour.

9. After each set of 10 deep breaths, cough to be sure your lungs are clear.  If you have an incision,support your incision when
coughing by placing a pillow firmly against it.

10.  Once you are able to get out of bed safely, take frequent walks and practice the cough.
